Overview
Affectionately dubbed ‘Lake Superior,’ Lake Burton is considered a premier vacation destination. The lake was named for Jeremiah Burton, a popular local who served as bailiff and in other civic positions. In 1913, a dam was completed on the Tallulah River, which created the more than 2,700 acres of water that would become Lake Burton. Located in the rugged North Georgia Mountains of Rabun and Burton counties, Lake Burton is filled with coves. Today, the lake plays an important infrastructural role in controlling the flow of water into Lake Seed.
