Overview
Located in North Carolina’s Graham and Swain counties, Fontana Lake is a reservoir impounded by the Fontana Dam on the Little Tennessee River. The lake forms part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s southern border and Nantahala National Forest’s northern border. Created by the Tennessee Valley Authority, Lake Fontana spans 29 miles long and comprises 10,230 acres. With more than 240 miles of shoreline, its deep, cold water provides an ideal habitat for several species of fish. Record-setting muskie and walleye catches have occurred regularly here as a result. A favorite for fishing, Lake Fontana is also considered one of the best places to catch smallmouth bass in the country. The Fisherman’s Bass Tournament Circuit has even held a Hall of Fame Classic at Fontana Lake.
