Overview
Surrounded by the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forest, Lake Hiwassee is fed by the Hiwassee, Nottely, and Valley Rivers. Covering 6,090 acres with almost 180 miles of shoreline, the lake measures 22 miles long and more than 200-feet deep. In 1940, the Tennessee Valley Authority built the Hiwassee Dam to provide better flood control and electric power to rural residents. At 307 feet, the Hiwassee Dam is the highest overspill dam in the world, and it spans the Hiwassee River for 1,376 miles. As one of the three ‘Chain of Lakes’ locations on the Tusquittee River, Lake Hiwassee is a perfect place to boat, water-ski, swim, and fish against a peaceful mountain landscape.
